He’s helped in not only looking at programming problems differently but actually teaching me how to solve them. Beforehand, I spent years, on-and-off, desperately trying to learn C# and C++ only to hit a wall at every attempt.
Most of the tutorials I looked up just listed code but never really explained why it was working the way it did. Or, if they did, it was over-simplified or would say, ‘just solve the problem and look things up.’ I kept seeing ‘break the problem down’ and it sounds simple, right, until you approach a coding problem yourself and discover it isn’t at all.
It took some time to get used to but Jon helped me go through the step-by-step process of breaking problems down. If we found more problems within that problem, we'd break those down further until we got to a point where we could literally translate it to code. After he had me go through that process quite a few times, I began to see another side of programming, problem solving, and critical-thinking. I started pushing through areas that I thought I'd never get through.
Out of the teachers and tutors I've had throughout the years, Jon is in a league of his own! Even if it takes an hour, he will walk you through any problem you're dealing with until the very end. He'll ask you questions that catch you off guard and get the gears in your mind to turn in ways you’d never thought about.

"Jon helped me get through college calculus.
For me, I gained a lot from being 're-lectured' over complex topics that I didn’t understand in my big lecture hall. One topic I really had trouble with was the fundamental theorem of calculus. I was able to absorb this topic much better when I was able to ask questions one-on-one. Jon broke topics down into pieces and explained them with graphs and other visuals which helped me understand them much easier.
For the smaller topics in calculus, like derivatives, finding local extrema, and related rates problems, it was useful to go through problems slowly. When I attempted problems on my own, I would second guess myself and get frustrated. Jon and I would go through problems together, talking through the steps, and I'd ask questions along the way. After a few problems, things would start to click and I would feel more comfortable doing them on my own.
Being able to ask Jon specific questions when I didn’t understand a concept was a lot less stressful than speaking up in my huge class. After a while, I gained confidence in my math abilities and felt more comfortable asking questions to the professor in lecture. Jon helped me get to that point."

"I hired Jon as a tutor for a required mathematics course in my graduate program through Northwestern University (predictive analytics). Though I was comfortable with statistics and probability, the coursework included linear algebra, calculus, and other topics I had little to no experience with. I was about 3 weeks into my course and knew I wouldn’t pass without help.
What impressed me most was that Jon could explain these concepts without requiring the use of my textbook. When he did refer to my text it was to clarify the method being used and to prepare me for future concepts I would be encountering. Not only could he explain the math, but he was able to step back and give me an idea of where a specific topic fit within mathematics as a whole. This was a perspective I never received in any course I’d ever taken!

"Our son Rory began working with Jon in August of 2016 to prepare him for 7th grade. Although we as parents tried to help our son with his math homework, we found we just didn’t have the skill or knowledge. Jon has been able to explain the process and give Rory tips and tricks to get the correct answer.
