Technical Expertise

Math, Science, & Engineering:
All Subjects, All Levels... One Place!

My passion is math, science, programming, robotics, and all other things technical. Let me clarify concepts, improve grades, and answer your questions so learning can be as efficient and painless as possible.

Every person has a unique learning style and varied interests. Our sessions are designed and adjusted, as necessary, to maximize conceptual understanding and retain topic interest.

Lastly, in the long run, understanding a concept is far easier (and more important!) than memorizing problems and formulae. Let me help you discover the "why?" and "how?" of these subjects.

"I am so thankful for all of Jon’s help!

I took an online calculus 2 course and really struggled the first part of the semester. Once I started meeting with Jon, not only did my grade improve, but homework started taking me a fraction of the time. Because of him, I actually started to enjoy solving math problems again.

Jon has a real gift for teaching; he explains concepts and problems in a way that is very easy to understand. He is also incredibly responsive to texts and emails between sessions.

In every aspect Jon helped me become a better student and I highly recommend him!"

"I hired Jon as a tutor to help me, not only with classes, but to become an overall better problem solver.

My engineering statics and dynamics course was the first time I’ve had to re-evaluate my ability to problem solve and learn advanced concepts from the beginning. With Jon, I have been able to see problems in different ways. He helped me understand the physical meaning of mathematical formulas, the reaction and internal forces of static systems, and various concepts in dynamics. Additionally, he advised me to make flashcards to re-memorize some of the more useful math identities.

He was also very accommodating to my busy work and school schedule as well as the location of our sessions.

I intend to continue using his tutoring in future courses to help me achieve my degree."

"I hired Jon as a tutor for a required mathematics course in my graduate program through Northwestern University (predictive analytics). Though I was comfortable with statistics and probability, the coursework included linear algebra, calculus, and other topics I had little to no experience with. I was about 3 weeks into my course and knew I wouldn’t pass without help.

What impressed me most was that Jon could explain these concepts without requiring the use of my textbook. When he did refer to my text it was to clarify the method being used and to prepare me for future concepts I would be encountering. Not only could he explain the math, but he was able to step back and give me an idea of where a specific topic fit within mathematics as a whole. This was a perspective I never received in any course I’d ever taken!

Besides being able to explain any topic forwards and backwards, Jon was extremely responsive any time I needed help on a problem. I knew if I needed help in a pinch I would get a speedy response.

Without his help I wouldn’t have passed that class. Just knowing that he is available for future sessions if/when I need them gives me peace of mind as I work through the challenging subject matter. I highly recommend Jon for any topic or level of mathematics."

"I wanted my daughter to experience success in math and science even though they are not her favorite subjects. I knew she had the capacity to learn but also that she needed good teachers so that SHE knew she could do it.

Before we met Jon, math and science homework were a daily challenge, especially when my daughter had a teacher who, unfortunately, just didn’t teach well. Tears, lack of confidence, and not wanting to go to school plagued our days. Then we met Jon. My daughter walked away from her first working session with him and said, 'Wow, I have never had anyone explain math so well to me.'

Jon is friendly, organized, flexible, and time efficient. But most importantly, he knows his stuff AND he knows how to teach so students understand. On top of that, he is caring and fun! We no longer have daily issues with math and science. Yes, sometimes there is some anxiety about a test, but nothing like the defeat and dread our daughter was feeling before. Her confidence has been restored.

Jon is our hero, truly. I am so very happy that my daughter has him on her side. We plan to keep him around indefinitely!"

"Jon is an ideal statistics tutor for his knowledge, expertise, and his great ability to help you understand - even if that requires multiple explanations (for those of us who are not statisticians).

As I worked on my dissertation that involved a quantitative analysis, he helped me ensure that I was properly understanding and explaining the fine points of my results. Jon is engaging and patient, and those qualities are really important when the topic is challenging. I am grateful to have worked with him.

Hi Jon,

I have to tell you - because it's funny - that when I was talking with my advisor about looking to schedule some tutoring sessions, he said to me, "well what about the guy who ran your [statistical] analysis?" My immediate response was that he was not the right guy. He was indeed that stereotypical statistics nerd (no offense to you ha!) and of VERY few words. Your personality is MUCH more suited to tutoring! You break the mold and it's very nice to see.

Best,
Ann H."

The Transformative Power of Tutoring

Discover the immediate and lasting benefits of tutoring.

Tutoring is a dynamic educational support system that has proven to be immensely beneficial for students of all ages and backgrounds. Whether it's math tutoring or assistance in any other subject, tutoring can make a significant difference in a student's academic journey and confidence. Consider the manifold of advantages and broader benefits that tutoring brings to learners.

1. Individualized Learning Experience:
Tutoring offers a personalized and tailored learning experience. Tutors can identify a student's strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to design a customized study plan to meet their specific needs. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of concepts and builds confidence, setting the stage for improved academic performance.

2. Enhanced Understanding and Mastery:
Math and other technical subjects can be challenging and classroom learning may not always cater to individual learning paces and styles. With tutoring, students receive one-on-one attention, allowing them to ask questions freely, clarify doubts, and delve into complex topics at their own pace. As a result, students gain a deeper understanding of concepts and, in time, can achieve mastery over the subject.

3. Boosted Academic Performance:
The individualized attention and focused guidance provided by tutors contribute significantly to improved academic performance. By addressing knowledge gaps and reinforcing key concepts, students can achieve higher grades and gain the confidence needed to excel in their studies.

4. Increased Self-Confidence:
A struggling student often faces academic setbacks that may diminish their self-confidence. Tutoring can turn this situation around by providing a safe and supportive environment where students can openly discuss their challenges. As they make progress and witness tangible improvements, their self-esteem and belief in their abilities soar.

5. Efficient Learning Strategies:
Tutors are skilled in adapting teaching methodologies to suit the student's learning style. They can employ a variety of techniques, such as hands-on activities, visual aids, and interactive exercises, to make learning more engaging and effective. By discovering the most suitable approach for each student, tutors foster an efficient and enjoyable learning experience.

6. Improved Study Habits:
Tutoring instills discipline and organization in a student's study routine. Tutors often help students develop effective study habits, time management skills, and goal-setting techniques. These transferable skills extend beyond the classroom and can significantly benefit the student's overall life.

7. Long-Term Academic Support:
Tutoring is not just a short-term solution but a long-term investment in a student's education. Continuous tutoring ensures that students stay on track and consistently improve over time. Furthermore, as students progress through different academic levels, their tutors can adapt their guidance to address new challenges effectively.

The benefits of tutoring extend far beyond just improving specific class skills. By providing personalized attention, boosting confidence, and fostering effective learning strategies, tutoring positively influences a student's academic journey. Tutoring offers invaluable support to learners across all subjects, enriching their educational experience, and laying the foundation for long-term success. Investing in tutoring is an investment in a brighter and more fulfilling academic future for students of all ages.
